James Buck is a Director of Photography working across commercial campaigns, branded content, documentary and broadcast — with a focus on technology, design and performance-led brands.
Originally trained in graphic design, he brings a strong sense of composition and a thoughtful approach to light, always looking to reveal the detail and character behind a subject — whether in controlled studio environments or on location in demanding conditions.
Alongside commissioned work, he values experimentation — testing new techniques, exploring unconventional lighting approaches and refining visual language through continual exploration. This balance of precision and curiosity informs every project.
He began his career at a London motion control studio Rushes/SVC, developing a deep technical understanding of complex camera systems and lighting. That foundation continues to shape his work today, balancing technical rigour with a calm, collaborative presence on set.
James works internationally across projects ranging from large-scale commercial productions and product launches to expedition-style documentary filmmaking and cultural storytelling. His films have screened at Cannes and Raindance Film Festivals.
Clients include Dyson, Aston Martin, Rolls-Royce, National Geographic, Discovery, BBC, Christie’s, Bonhams, Chivas and Courvoisier.
